Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

Your day-to-day tasks will be varied and hands-on, ensuring no two days are the same. You will be responsible for the accurate and timely processing of customer orders within a modern warehouse setting.

  • Order Picking & Packing: Accurately pick products from warehouse locations based on pick sheets or RF scanners. Pack items securely according to specific packaging guidelines to prevent damage during transit, a skill similar to that of a precise Production Packer.
  • Goods In & Stock Control: Assist with unloading delivery vehicles, checking received goods against purchase orders, and safely moving stock to designated storage areas. Conduct regular stock counts to maintain inventory accuracy.
  • Operating MHE (Material Handling Equipment): Safely operate equipment such as pallet trucks, counterbalance forklifts (if licensed), and walkie-riders to move stock efficiently. Full training and certification can be provided for suitable candidates.
  • Maintaining Health & Safety Standards: Adhere strictly to all warehouse safety protocols, including PPE use, manual handling techniques, and maintaining a clean, tidy, and hazard-free work environment. This proactive mindset is as crucial here as it is on a construction site for a Roofer.
  • Dispatch & Loading: Prepare orders for dispatch, ensuring all documentation is complete and correct. Assist with loading outbound vehicles in a safe and orderly manner.

Essential Requirements & Skills

We are looking for candidates who are physically fit, reliable, and have a positive can-do attitude. While full training is provided for specific processes, certain core attributes are essential.

  • The right to work in the UK.

Advantageous Skills

  • Valid Counterbalance or Reach Truck forklift licence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What experience do I need to be a Warehouse Operative / Picker Packer in Birmingham B3?

While previous warehouse experience is highly valued, we also consider candidates with transferable skills from roles requiring physical work, organisation, and attention to detail. For example, the methodical nature of a Production Packer or the physical resilience needed in construction are relevant. Full training on specific processes and systems is provided. The most important attributes are reliability, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. For those completely new to the sector, we often have entry-level porter or assistant roles – browse our Jobs page to see all options.

Are the shifts flexible? Can I work around other commitments?

Absolutely. One of the key benefits of working with an agency like Catering Jobs is flexibility. We work with multiple clients in the Birmingham B3 area who require cover for different shift patterns: early mornings (6 am starts), late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. During your registration, we'll discuss your availability and match you with roles that fit. This flexibility is ideal for students, parents, or those with multiple jobs. It's a similar model we use for seasonal event staff, offering work that fits around your life.

How does the pay and holiday work with a temporary agency?

You are paid an hourly rate for all hours worked, which is paid directly into your bank account on a weekly basis. Your payslip will clearly detail your hours, rate, and any deductions. As a temporary worker, you are entitled to holiday pay under UK law. This is typically accrued as you work and can be paid out when you take holiday or at the end of your assignment. We ensure all our pay practices are 100% compliant and transparent. For a deeper understanding of modern staffing, watch our video On-Demand Labour Explained.

What is the difference between a Picker Packer and a general Warehouse Operative?

The roles often overlap, but there is a subtle focus. A Picker Packer role is typically more specialised in the order fulfilment process: accurately selecting items from shelves (picking) and then packaging them securely for shipment (packing). A general Warehouse Operative might have a broader range of duties including loading/unloading vehicles (goods in/out), stock replenishment, using MHE, and general housekeeping. This particular role combines elements of both, making it an excellent all-round position to develop a wide skill set in logistics. It's as specialised in its own way as a Nursing Assistant is within healthcare.

What are the opportunities for career progression from this role?

The logistics sector offers clear career paths. Starting as a Warehouse Operative/Picker Packer, you can progress to become a Team Leader, Warehouse Supervisor, or Shift Manager. Gaining additional certifications, such as a forklift instructor ticket or health and safety qualifications, can significantly boost your prospects. Many of our temporary assignments have a temp-to-perm option, allowing you to secure a permanent contract with the client company and access their internal progression schemes. We support this growth, just as we do for candidates in Catering General Manager roles.
