Warehouse Assistant Job Description

Catering Jobs is partnering with premier logistics and distribution centres in Manchester M4 to source dedicated Warehouse Assistants. Our clients range from national food wholesalers supplying the hospitality sector to fast-paced e-commerce fulfilment hubs. This isn't just a job; it's a critical role within the supply chain that keeps Manchester's businesses moving. We specialise in connecting local talent with reputable employers who value speed, accuracy, and a strong work ethic.

By applying through Catering Jobs, you gain access to a curated selection of roles that many aren't advertised publicly. Our deep understanding of the Manchester M4 logistics landscape means we can match you with environments that suit your skills, whether you thrive in chilled environments, large-scale retail distribution, or specialised warehousing for catering supplies. We handle the vetting and introduction, so you can focus on performing well and securing ongoing work, with many of our temporary positions offering a clear path to a permanent contract.

Core Responsibilities & Daily Duties

As a Warehouse Assistant in Manchester M4, your day will be dynamic and hands-on. You will be an integral part of a team ensuring goods are received, stored, and dispatched efficiently and accurately.

  • Goods In & Stock Receipt: Unloading delivery vehicles (including assisting HGV drivers with paperwork), checking quantities against purchase orders, and inspecting goods for damage. You'll use handheld RF scanners to log items into the warehouse management system (WMS).
  • Order Picking & Packing: Accurately picking products from storage locations (shelving, pallet racking) based on pick lists for customer orders. Preparing items for shipment, which includes careful packing, labelling, and sealing parcels to ensure they arrive in perfect condition.
  • Stock Rotation & Replenishment: Operating manual and powered pallet trucks (PPT) and forklifts (if certified) to move stock safely. Conducting regular stock counts and ensuring the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) system is followed, a critical task in food and catering supply warehouses.
  • Dispatch & Loading: Preparing dispatch documentation, building and securing loads on pallets, and safely loading vehicles for outbound delivery. You'll work closely with transport teams to ensure timely departures.
  • Housekeeping & Compliance: Maintaining exemplary standards of health, safety, and hygiene. This includes daily cleaning of work areas, safe disposal of waste, reporting any hazards, and adhering to all site-specific safety protocols. Your vigilance supports the work of any onsite Quality Control Inspector.
  • Team Support & Communication: Providing general support to the warehouse team and supervisors. Communicating effectively about stock issues, shortages, or potential delays to ensure seamless operations.

Essential Skills & Experience We Require

To be successful in this Warehouse Assistant role in Manchester M4, you don't necessarily need years of experience, but you must demonstrate core competencies and the right attitude. Our clients look for candidates who are reliable, physically fit, and keen to learn.

Must-Have Requirements

  • Right to Work: Valid proof of right to work in the UK.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to safely lift and move items (up to 25kg), stand for long periods, and work in ambient or chilled environments.
  • Reliability & Punctuality: A proven track record of excellent timekeeping and attendance.
  • Basic Numeracy & Literacy: Ability to read labels, understand numbers, and complete basic paperwork accurately.

Highly Desirable Skills

  • Previous Warehouse Experience: Even 6 months in a similar role is a significant advantage.
  • FLT/PPT Licence: Counterbalance, Reach, or Powered Pallet Truck certification is highly sought-after and can command a higher pay rate.
  • WMS/RF Scanner Experience: Familiarity with warehouse management systems and handheld scanning devices.
  • Team Player Attitude: A positive, can-do approach and the ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team.

If you have transferable skills from roles like a Parking Attendant (managing logistics in a different context), retail stockroom work, or any manual handling job, we strongly encourage you to apply. We assess potential as much as experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about becoming a Warehouse Assistant with Catering Jobs in Manchester? We've compiled the most common queries below.

We offer a variety of shifts to suit different lifestyles. The most common patterns in the M4 area include early mornings (6 am - 2 pm), late afternoons (2 pm - 10 pm), and night shifts (10 pm - 6 am). Many of our clients also offer flexible part-time hours and weekend work. During your registration, we'll discuss your availability and match you with suitable roles. For those seeking maximum flexibility, our on-demand roles are perfect, similar to the approach we take for urgent van driver jobs in London NW1.

Absolutely. While a licence is desirable and can increase your pay, many Warehouse Assistant roles are for 'floor workers' who perform picking, packing, loading, and manual handling duties. A positive attitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn are often more important to our clients. If you are interested in obtaining a licence, we can often point you towards local training providers and may even have clients who offer training for promising long-term temporary staff.

For candidates who have all their documentation ready (right to work, NI number, bank details), the process can be incredibly fast. It is possible to apply in the morning, complete a phone interview by lunch, and be registered by the end of the day for a start the following morning. The speed depends on client requirements and your own availability. We specialise in urgent staffing, much like our service for hiring a Gatwick painter & decorator.

When you register with Catering Jobs, you gain access to multiple employers through a single point of contact. We handle your payroll, holiday pay, and provide ongoing support. This gives you flexibility and variety. Many of our assignments are 'temp-to-perm', meaning if you excel, the client can offer you a direct permanent contract—often without the need for a new interview. We act as your advocate and career gateway. For a deeper dive into this topic, watch our video "How Much I Earn as a Temp Agency Worker vs Direct Hire".

Always wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear (steel-toe cap boots are ideal and often mandatory). Wear comfortable, durable clothing you don't mind getting dirty (e.g., jeans/trousers and a t-shirt). The client will provide all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as high-visibility vests, safety helmets, and gloves specific to the task. We will confirm any specific requirements before your first shift.
