While previous experience in a similar role—such as a Kitchen Assistant, pot wash, or any job requiring high standards of cleanliness—is beneficial, it is not always essential. Many employers value a strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn above all. We provide guidance and can often place candidates who demonstrate the right attitude. For those new to the industry, it's a fantastic entry point into the world of hospitality.
Shifts are highly flexible and depend on the client's needs. Common patterns include: Split shifts (e.g., 10am-2pm and 5pm-10pm) covering lunch and dinner service; Evening shifts (4pm-midnight) for busy restaurants; Weekend shifts in pubs and event venues; and Full-day shifts for contract caterers. We work with you to find shifts that match your availability, whether you're looking for part-time hours or full-time work. For more insights into flexible work, see our guide to temporary agency work.
Absolutely. Many of our temporary Kitchen Porter placements are used by employers as a 'try before you hire' period. If you demonstrate reliability, a good attitude, and strong work ethic, it is very common for employers to offer a permanent contract. We actively facilitate these temp-to-perm transitions and have seen many porters progress to Kitchen Assistant or even commis Chef roles. Express your career ambitions to your consultant from the start.
For your first shift, wear plain, dark, non-slip, closed-toe shoes (essential for safety) and comfortable, dark trousers and a t-shirt. Avoid loose clothing or jewellery. Most clients will provide a uniform (apron, chef's jacket, hat) upon arrival, but it's best to confirm this with your Catering Jobs consultant beforehand. Always prioritise safety and practicality.
We operate a simple, reliable weekly pay cycle. You submit your timesheet (usually electronically) at the end of your working week. Once approved by the client, we process your payment. You will be paid every Friday for the previous week's work directly into your bank account. All pay slips are provided digitally, and our team is always available to answer any queries about your pay.

From Porter to Commis Chef: A Newcastle Success Story
Mark R.
Now: Commis Chef at a Quayside Restaurant
Started as a Kitchen Porter, Sept 2022
“I registered with Catering Jobs with no professional kitchen experience. They placed me as a temporary Porter in a steakhouse. I kept my head down, learned the rhythm of the kitchen, and always asked the chefs if they needed extra help with prep. Within six months, a Commis Chef role opened up, and the Head Chef recommended me. Catering Jobs helped negotiate my new contract. The Porter role isn’t just a job; it’s the best way to learn a kitchen from the ground up.”

A Day in the Life: Kitchen Porter Shift Timeline
4:00 PM – Shift Start & Briefing
Arrive, sign in, and receive a briefing from the Chef de Partie. Check the state of the pot wash area, ensure chemical levels are full, and note any special equipment needed for the evening's menu.
4:30 PM – Pre-Service Setup
Assist with 'mise en place' for the kitchen assistants: peeling potatoes, washing salad, sorting herbs. Collect empty delivery crates and break them down. Give the kitchen floors an initial mop to ensure a safe, non-slip environment for the service ahead.
6:00 PM – Service Ramp-Up
The first orders come in. Your focus shifts to the dishwasher, ensuring a continuous cycle of dirty pans, plates, and utensils being cleaned, dried, and returned to their stations. Communication is key—chefs will call for specific clean items urgently.
10:30 PM – Service Wind-Down & Deep Clean
The last orders are out. Now, the thorough clean-down begins: degreasing all cooking stations, scrubbing floors, sanitising bins, cleaning filters in the extraction hoods, and polishing all stainless steel. The kitchen is returned to a pristine state, ready for the next day.
