Kitchen Assistant Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and reliable Kitchen Assistant to join a premier catering establishment in the vibrant Swansea SA1 area. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes pride in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and food safety. You will be a crucial support to the Head Chef and kitchen team, ensuring seamless service during busy periods, from corporate events to local functions.
This position, sourced through Catering Jobs, offers more than just a job; it's a gateway to a career in the thriving South Wales hospitality sector. Our client, a well-respected name in catering and events, values teamwork and a positive attitude. If you are looking for an immediate start in Swansea with the potential for long-term progression, this role provides the perfect platform to develop your skills alongside experienced professionals.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Assist with basic food preparation under the guidance of the Commis Chef and senior kitchen staff, including washing, peeling, chopping vegetables, and preparing simple salads.
- Maintain impeccable cleanliness and hygiene standards throughout the kitchen, including washing up, sanitising surfaces, equipment, and floors, and ensuring compliance with all HACCP and food safety regulations.
- Manage stock rotation, assist with receiving deliveries, and ensure all storage areas are organised, labelled, and kept tidy to facilitate efficient kitchen operations.
- Support the service team by plating dishes, ensuring the pass area is clean and stocked, and helping with any ancillary tasks required for smooth service.
- Adhere to all health, safety, and COSHH procedures, taking responsibility for the safe use and cleaning of equipment, and reporting any maintenance issues promptly.
- Work collaboratively with all team members, demonstrating a positive, can-do attitude even during peak pressure, contributing to a supportive and productive kitchen environment.
Essential Skills & Requirements
- Previous experience in a kitchen environment (catering, restaurant, hotel) is highly desirable, but a strong work ethic and willingness to learn are paramount for entry-level candidates.
- A fundamental understanding of, and commitment to, food hygiene and safety. A Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate is a significant advantage, but training can be provided.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and maintain high standards during long shifts, including weekends and evenings as required.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills. You must be able to follow instructions precisely from the Head Chef and work harmoniously with colleagues.
- Physical fitness and stamina are required for a role that involves standing for long periods, lifting sacks, moving stock, and working in a hot, busy kitchen.
- Reliability and punctuality are non-negotiable. Our client needs staff they can depend on for early morning starts and late finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions
While formal catering qualifications (like NVQs) are beneficial, they are not always essential for a Kitchen Assistant role. Employers primarily value a strong work ethic, reliability, a willingness to learn, and a positive attitude. Previous experience in any fast-paced environment (even if not a kitchen) is a big advantage. We often provide or recommend short, accredited courses like Level 2 Food Safety to successful candidates to enhance their skills and employability.
Shift patterns can vary depending on the specific client's needs. Common patterns include early shifts (6 am starts), late finishes (after event service), and split shifts. Weekend work is often required in hospitality. The key advantage of working with Catering Jobs is flexibility – we discuss your availability upfront and will only put you forward for roles that match your preferred hours, whether you're looking for full-time, part-time, or weekend-only jobs.
Absolutely. Many of our clients use temporary assignments as extended interviews. They are looking for reliable, skilled, and culturally fit staff to join their permanent teams. This particular Swansea SA1 role is explicitly advertised as temp-to-perm. Demonstrating a good attitude, punctuality, and a knack for the work significantly increases your chances of being offered a permanent contract after the initial trial period. We've placed many Kitchen Assistants who have gone on to become Commis Chefs and beyond.
We specialise in immediate starts. The process is designed for speed. Once you submit your application, our recruitment team aims to contact suitable candidates within 24 hours. Interviews are often arranged within 48 hours. Assuming a successful interview and completion of any necessary pre-employment checks (like right-to-work), you could be starting your first shift within the same week.
