HGV Driver Class 1 Job Description

Catering Jobs is acting on behalf of a major logistics and distribution client operating from a key depot in the Sheffield S9 area. We are seeking a professional, safety-conscious, and experienced HGV Driver Class 1 (Category C+E) to join their team on a temporary basis with a strong view to becoming a permanent member of staff for the right candidate. This role is critical to maintaining supply chain operations across Yorkshire and the North of England.

As a specialist in connecting skilled drivers with reputable employers, Catering Jobs understands the local Sheffield market. Our client is a well-established name in transport and logistics, known for investing in their workforce and maintaining a modern, reliable fleet. This position offers more than just a driving job; it’s a career opportunity with a company that values reliability and professionalism. If you hold a valid Class 1 licence and are looking for immediate, regular work in S9, this role is an excellent fit. We also have a variety of other logistics roles listed on our Find Driving Jobs page.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

  • Safe Vehicle Operation: Conducting daily vehicle checks (DEFECT reporting) and driving a Class 1 articulated lorry in full compliance with DVSA regulations, UK Highway Code, and company policies. This includes planning efficient routes, accounting for traffic and weather conditions, and ensuring all digital tachograph records are accurately maintained.
  • Loading & Unloading: Responsible for the secure loading and unloading of goods, which may involve curtain-sider or box trailer operations. You will be expected to safely use appropriate MHE (Material Handling Equipment) such as a tail lift or pump truck, and ensure all loads are restrained correctly in accordance with Load Securement regulations (DVSA Guide).
  • Customer Service & Delivery: Acting as the face of the company at customer delivery points. This involves professional communication with site staff, ensuring paperwork (delivery notes, PODs) is completed accurately and signed for, and resolving any minor delivery queries promptly and courteously.
  • Vehicle Maintenance & Cleanliness: Ensuring the vehicle cab and exterior are kept to a high standard of cleanliness. Reporting any vehicle defects, damage, or maintenance issues immediately to the transport office to ensure fleet safety and reliability.
  • Compliance & Administration: Managing your driver's hours and rest periods legally using the digital tachograph. Completing all required journey documentation, fuel receipts, and incident reports as necessary. Adhering strictly to site-specific health and safety rules at all delivery locations.

Essential Requirements & What We're Looking For

  • Valid Licences & Documents: A full, valid UK HGV Class 1 (C+E) driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points (IN10, DR, DD, and CU50 endorsements will be scrutinised). A current, valid Driver CPC Card and a fully up-to-date Digital Tachograph Card are mandatory.
  • Proven Experience: Minimum of 12 months of recent, verifiable experience driving Class 1 vehicles. Experience with urban multi-drop work as well as longer trunking is highly desirable. Familiarity with the road networks in and around Sheffield, Yorkshire, and the North is a distinct advantage.
  • Safety & Attitude: An impeccable safety record and a proactive safety mindset. We need a reliable, punctual, and professional driver who takes pride in their work, can work independently, and is flexible with shift patterns which may include occasional nights out.
  • Physical & Digital Literacy: The role requires good physical fitness for loading activities. Basic digital literacy for using on-board systems and completing electronic paperwork is required. Excellent communication skills for dealing with the transport office and customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What specific areas in Sheffield S9 will I be working from?

The primary client depot is located in the Tinsley (S9) area, a major logistics hub close to the M1 motorway (Junctions 33 & 34). Deliveries will be nationwide, but local knowledge of Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, and the wider Yorkshire road network is highly beneficial for efficient route planning.

2. Are there night-out allowances or accommodation provided?

For trunking work that requires a night away from home, our client operates a fair and compliant policy. This typically includes a pre-arranged tax-free overnight allowance to cover meals and, if necessary, the client will book and pay for suitable accommodation directly. Your consultant will explain the specific policy for this role during your screening call.

3. I have 6 points on my licence for a SP30. Will I still be considered?

A minor speeding endorsement like an SP30 is often acceptable to most clients, provided it does not take you over the 6-point threshold that some insurers impose. The critical factor is full disclosure. You must declare all points and endorsements during application. Major offences (IN10, DR, DD, etc.) will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and may affect eligibility.

4. How quickly can I start after applying?

We operate a fast-track process for urgent roles like this HGV Driver Class 1 position. If your documentation is in order and you are available immediately, it is possible to be interviewed, vetted, and start work within the same week. The speed depends on how quickly you can provide your documents and attend any required client induction.

5. Does Catering Jobs have other driving or logistics jobs in Sheffield?

Absolutely. We constantly recruit for Class 2, 7.5 Tonne, and van driver roles across Sheffield. We also fill many warehouse operative and order picker positions in the region. Registering with us for this role gives you access to our entire database. You can browse all current vacancies on our Recent Jobs page.

6. What is the typical shift pattern for this role?

Shift patterns vary by client needs. This specific role likely involves a mixture of early starts (4am-6am) for trunking work and later starts for multi-drop rounds. There may be occasional weekend work. Flexibility is key. Your Catering Jobs consultant will give you the exact shift details for this position once your application is shortlisted, ensuring the pattern aligns with your availability.
