We are working with several esteemed restaurants, hotels, and event caterers in the CV1 postcode area who are seeking talented junior chefs to join their kitchens immediately. This role is perfect for someone at the foundation of their career, ready to learn from experienced Sous Chefs and Head Chefs, and contribute to a high-quality food service operation.
At Catering Jobs, we specialise in connecting skilled hospitality professionals with the best local employers. Whether you're seeking an immediate start to bridge a gap, a flexible shift pattern to suit your lifestyle, or a solid temp-to-perm opportunity to build a lasting career, we have the network and expertise to place you. Our clients range from busy city centre brasseries to large-scale event venues, offering diverse experiences for a Commis Chef.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties
As a Commis Chef in Coventry, you will be an integral part of the kitchen brigade. Your focus will be on preparation, basic cooking, and maintaining impeccable standards to support the smooth running of the section.

-
Stock Control & Delivery Management: Checking and rotating stock, ensuring the correct storage of all food items, and assisting with the receipt and organisation of deliveries. Helping to minimise waste through diligent practice.
-
Hygiene & Cleanliness: Maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and food safety in your section. This includes deep cleaning of workstations, equipment, and storage areas at the end of each shift, adhering to all HACCP procedures.
-
Team Collaboration: Working effectively as part of a fast-paced kitchen team, taking instruction clearly, and communicating proactively with the Kitchen Porter and other brigade members to ensure seamless service.

To be successful in this Commis Chef role, you should possess a genuine passion for food and a strong desire to learn. While formal qualifications are beneficial, a positive attitude and proven experience are key.

- Strong work ethic, reliability, and a keen eye for detail and presentation.
Highly Desirable Attributes
- Ambition to progress to a Chef de Partie role, with a willingness to learn new techniques and cuisines.

- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- Flexibility to work across different sites in Coventry, as we also manage short-term catering jobs and event staffing.

Frequently Asked Questions
A Commis Chef is the entry-level position in a professional kitchen brigade. The role is foundational, focusing on learning and supporting. Key tasks include ingredient preparation (mise en place), basic cooking of simple items, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in their section, assisting chefs de partie, and managing stock. It's a vital learning role where you absorb techniques, kitchen discipline, and speed from more senior chefs like the Sous Chef and Head Chef. It's the first step towards roles like Chef de Partie.
Absolutely. Experience as a Kitchen Porter is highly valuable and often the most common pathway to becoming a Commis Chef. You already understand the pace, pressure, and hygiene standards of a professional kitchen. This role would involve stepping onto the food preparation side. We look for KP's who have shown initiative, a keen interest in food, and reliability. Be prepared to discuss any basic food prep you may have done and your eagerness to learn more. This is a fantastic career progression step.
Flexibility varies by employer. Some roles in hotels may require fixed early or late shifts, while event-based work or temporary cover can be more ad-hoc. When you register with Catering Jobs, we discuss your availability upfront and only put you forward for roles that match it. We have a wide range of clients, so whether you're looking for part-time, full-time, weekend-only, or temporary block work, we can likely find something to suit. Being clear about your availability from the start helps us match you perfectly.
Temp-to-perm is a very common hiring model in hospitality. It means you start in a temporary position, often to cover a peak period or to fill an immediate gap. This serves as an extended working interview for both you and the employer. If you perform well, integrate into the team, and the business has a permanent need, they will typically offer you a permanent contract after an agreed period (e.g., 8-12 weeks). It's a low-risk way for both parties to ensure it's a good fit. Many of our Commis Chef placements lead to permanent offers.
For a Commis Chef role, focus on practicality. Your CV should clearly list any previous kitchen experience (even if as a Kitchen Porter), any relevant qualifications (e.g., NVQ in Professional Cookery, Food Hygiene Certificate), and your key skills (e.g., knife skills, teamwork, ability to work under pressure). In your cover message or application, mention your availability (e.g.,"immediate start","available for evening shifts") and your career motivation (e.g.,"eager to learn and progress to Chef de Partie"). If you are interested email your cv and info to [email protected]. We review all applications personally.
